From Ponta Delgada Cruise Port
Furnas Valley from Ponta Delgada
A caldera that steams, smells of sulphur and grows some of the Azores' finest gardens on the heat beneath it.
Distance
About 45 km from Ponta Delgada
Travel time
Usually around 45 minutes each way by road
Time needed
Allow 4–6 hours including the gardens and geothermal sites
Furnas Valley occupies its own volcanic caldera on the eastern side of São Miguel, roughly 45 minutes from Ponta Delgada via the IP1 expressway. Fumaroles, thermal pools and botanical gardens make it feel entirely different from the west-side crater lakes, but the distance is real and deserves an honest look before booking.
Bubbling fumaroles and hot springs cluster near Lagoa das Furnas, where the traditional Azorean stew cozido is slow-cooked underground using geothermal heat — striking to see even without eating the dish.
Terra Nostra Park is the valley's best-known garden, with mature trees, hydrangea-lined paths and an iron-rich thermal pool. Confirm swimming and towel arrangements with your specific operator rather than assuming they are included.
Furnas lies in the opposite direction from Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo. A same-day combination with either is not realistic on a normal call — each deserves its own dedicated visit.
Because of the road distance and the amount there is to see, treat Furnas as a long-call excursion. On a shorter call, choose a closer option such as Ponta Delgada's historic centre or Sete Cidades instead.
How to get there from the cruise port
| Method | Detail | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organised shore excursion | Direct transport with a guided route and return timing designed around the ship. | Full or long half-day | Tour price |
| Private driver-guide | Useful for adjusting pace between the gardens, fumaroles and any thermal-pool time. | Full or long half-day | Premium |
| Rental car | Possible for confident independent drivers, though timing the return realistically matters more here than on shorter routes. | Around 45 minutes each way | Variable |
Times and costs are indicative. Always keep a 60–90 minute buffer before all-aboard.

Furnas Valley from Ponta Delgada — FAQs
Is Furnas worth the extra distance?▼
Many visitors find it the most memorable contrast on the island, but only with a call long enough to enjoy it without rushing the return.
Is the thermal pool included?▼
Only if your specific tour lists it. Access, changing facilities and towels vary by operator and should be confirmed directly.
Is Furnas suitable for a six-hour call?▼
Usually not comfortably. Choose Ponta Delgada's historic centre or Sete Cidades instead on a shorter call and save Furnas for a longer sailing.
