From Ponta Delgada Cruise Port
Sete Cidades from Ponta Delgada
A blue lake and a green lake asleep inside an old volcano — São Miguel's most photographed view.
Distance
About 25–35 km from Ponta Delgada
Travel time
Usually 40–45 minutes each way by road
Time needed
Allow 2–3 hours for the viewpoints and village
Sete Cidades sits inside a vast volcanic caldera roughly 40–45 minutes west of Ponta Delgada. Vista do Rei's view over Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde is the reason most cruise passengers make the trip, but the crater rim is also one of the cloudiest spots on the island — plan with that honestly in mind.
The two lakes take their common blue-and-green colouring from depth, light and mineral content rather than any single dramatic feature, and a narrow stone causeway separates them almost exactly at the point where the colours meet.
Vista do Rei, beside the abandoned Monte Palace hotel, is the best-known viewpoint, but the smaller Boca do Inferno viewpoint on the descent road into the caldera offers a different, closer angle worth the short stop.
The caldera floor holds Sete Cidades village itself: a scattering of houses, a small church and pasture around the lake edge, reachable by the road that spirals down from the rim.
Cloud risk here is genuinely high — the rim can sit inside mist even when Ponta Delgada is clear at sea level. An early departure, ideally before 9am, meaningfully improves the odds of a clear view without ever guaranteeing one.
How to get there from the cruise port
| Method | Detail | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cruise-aware shore excursion | The simplest option, with an itinerary and return timing built around your ship's schedule. | Half-day | Tour price |
| Private vehicle and guide | Offers flexible timing and viewpoint choice, useful if you want to wait out passing cloud. | Half-day | Premium |
| Rental car or taxi | Possible for confident independent travellers, but road signage and parking at Vista do Rei can be busy in peak season. | 40–45 minutes each way | Variable |
Times and costs are indicative. Always keep a 60–90 minute buffer before all-aboard.
